CUBAN
TRADE UNIONISTS VISITING TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
Two trade unionists from Cuba are in Trinidad
as guests of the National Trade Union Centre.
Mr. Anibal Melo and Mr. Eddy Brown will
arrive today (21st July) and will be staying until Friday 23rd
July.
Mr. Melo is the Caribbean Regional
Representative of the World Federation of Trade Unions and Mr.
Eddy Brown is from the Cuban Trade Union Centre (Central de
Trabajadores de Cuba).
The visit to Trinidad and Tobago is part of a
regional tour, which has taken in Jamaica and Barbados.
In welcoming to delegation, Robert Giuseppi,
NATUC’s President, said:
“We
welcome this opportunity to strengthen ties with the Cuban trade union movement.
The tightening of the US blockade on Cuba is a threat to the stability of the
region and with Cuba setting an example in health care, education and low
unemployment it is important that we defend these gains. We also have to take
advantage of this visit to build our campaign against the Free Trade Area of the
Americas which threatens the political and economic independence of all
countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
The
Cuban delegation will be meeting with the International Labour Organisation,
speaking at a meeting for trade unionists on the current situation in Cuba and
also meeting with senior officers from the National Trade Union Centre.
